Most college students are drowning in midterms right around this time. Stress is at an all-time high and funds might be running low. If you need a little getaway to survive spring semester, there’s a break for every budget. A little cash can take you a long way (literally).
There are so many options for spring break vacations that won’t break the bank. From booking a place to packing your bags, here are some ways to live your best life while keeping the costs down.
Planning
Check out Airbnb or VRBO. You’re here for a good time, not a long time. Skip a fancy resort or hotel and rent a space that’s a little more cost friendly. You probably won’t spend much time cooped up in the room, anyway. Or, stay with somebody you know that lives out of town.
Make it a road trip! If possible, drive to your destination. Avoiding the expense of plane tickets could cut your price in half. Carpooling has a lot of other pros, too: split the gas costs, take turns behind the wheel, and avoid expensive Ubers.
Packing
Don’t forget your stuff. The price tags at shops in the airport are enough to make anyone afraid of flying. Forget just a few things and you’ll end up spending more at the gift shop than the trip itself.
Be prepared for emergencies. If you’re traveling internationally, keep cash on hand to avoid racking up fees for foreign transactions or emergency withdrawals. Also, be diligent about safeguarding your money (don’t literally keep it on hand).
Partying
Break out of your comfort zone. If you’re looking to try something new and exciting, get the best bang for your buck. Explore sites like Expedia or Travelocity to score package deals on extra adventures and excursions. Also, sites like Unidays and StudentUniverse offer great discounts for college students with a budget.
Bring your own food (and drinks!). Stock up on snacks and booze to offset the cost of eating out. $15 margaritas on the beach are a tourist trap that will add up very quickly. Or, consider a cash budget. It’s easy to get carried away with your credit card when there’s alcohol involved.
